Primary activities: Acoustic solution development for new automotive applications including transducers, acoustic modules, signal processing, amplification and full system architecture. I’m the full-time manager of Tymphany Design Sciences, an international engineering team focused on delivering new acoustic concepts, PoCs, benchmarking and other consulting-style activities to automotive clients.
Secondary activities: Mechanical design and prototyping of loudspeaker components/assemblies for consumer and professional audio applications.
When I joined Tymphany in 2020, they were already in full swing on a thing called the “AADE”, the Automotive Audio Development Environment. Shortly after joining, the team asked very politely: “we were kind of hoping you would take this on and help us build it up and make it run!” and it was instantly made my first project.
Not only did I need to oversee the fabrication of the hardware that had been commissioned offsite, but also make it work for audio and acoustic engineers by adding in all the necessary wiring and electronics in the “vehicle” to make it a real sandbox for prototyping new sound systems.
I ended up designing and building a wiring harness that could support up to 330 speaker connections, a vertically mounted touch screen (which was the style at the time) to tune DSP configs and play media from. I eventually gained an engineering team which I led to create even more functionality by adding a 96 channel amplifier, low voltage electrical system to drive seats and lighting as well as more details to make the lives of engineers easier.
Over the years I have designed countless prototypes for this and brought prototype audio systems to life with the help of my team and colleagues.
Building Audio Foundry
In 2023 Tymphany decided to bring Audio Foundry to life with the idea of creating an automotive audio collaborative that could innovate and incubate new ideas in the space.
Looking after Audio Foundry has been another big part of my contribution to Tymphany and the world of automotive audio. I have a passion for open innovation and the opportunity to support Audio Foundry and shape its growth has been a fantastic opportunity.
The random and fun non-automotive bit:
Every now and then we have to work together to make something for CES, demos or prototype proposals for our big audio brand clients. Here are some favorites that I helped design over the years.
